Most Internet Service Provider (ISP) contracts include enough ‘free’ space on their servers for a small web site (computers that are connected to the Internet 24 hours a day) . They usually state this is for private use.
If you are going to host your web page/site with your internet service
provider then it will be under their addressing system, for example: www.members.bigpuddle.com.au/yourname/homepage.html

This is unsatisfactory for business use. It’s very large, too hard for people to remember & easy to make a typing mistake. But you can purchase & use your own name, for example www.yourname.com.au. You can then use a redirection service so when someone looks up www.yourname.com.au this is redirected to www.members.bigpuddle.com.au/yourname/homepage.html where your web page is stored.
Better still is to have your own hosting account so that www.yourname.com.au is all that will appear in the browser address bar.
Business hosting is can usually be carried out by your ISP but
a dedicated hosting provider can be a better choice.
Your Domain Name (web address) is distributed to a set of special web server computers around
the world that contain huge lists with the location of every name so anyone can access your page.

It is common for prices
to vary a lot & some companies advertise very high charges .A 'dot com' address (www.yourname.com)
can be obtained for as low as A$20 to $30. This includes a redirection service to your web page
& for several e mail addresses to your ISP mail box.
Theoretically an Australian registered business name is required to obtain a 'dot com dot au'
address and you will be asked for an ABN number.
